The PETRAS National Centre of Excellence for IoT Systems Cybersecurity’s ‘At the Edge’ podcast series explores how the Internet of Things (IoT), AI and cybersecurity technologies may help (or hinder?) humanity with its greatest challenges of tackling climate change and achieving Net Zero targets. Connected Everything Early Career Researcher Placement Scheme

This call is to support PhD students and ECRs gain first-hand experience of industry engagement as either a virtual or onsite placement. Awards will be made up to a maximum of £5,000 (funded at 80% fEC) with £30,000 available in the overall budget. Read more here.

Registration now open: Hints and tips for successful stakeholder engagement

SPRITE+ is pleased to partner with PETRAS to deliver an online workshop for Early Career Researchers on 12 November 2021 (14.00-15.30).

This workshop will focus on hints and tips for successful stakeholder engagement, covering key topics such as what academic researchers should emphasise and how research should be packaged when contacting or pitching to stakeholders. We have an impressive line-up of contributors representing a diverse set of industries and sectors. There will be an opportunity to listen to their top tips and ask questions during our panel discussion.

Confirmed speakers include: Peter Hazell (Cyber-Physical Security Manager at Yorkshire Water), Wendy Jephson (Head of Research & Ideation, Market Technology at Nasdaq), Conrad Thompson (Business Transformation Expert, Organizational Agility at PA Consulting Group Ltd) and Rob Kerner (CEO at Inogesis).

SPRITE+ is pleased to partner with the Greater Manchester Cyber Security Advisory Group to host an in person event on 11 November 2021 (15.30-18.00) to bring together representatives of the city-region’s cyber ecosystem in Greater Manchester.

This event will feature talks from SPRITE+, Greater Manchester Cyber Security Advisory Group and national government representatives, with plenty of time for networking over drinks.

Registration now open: Discribe Hub+ Introduction // Substantive Projects Funding Call

We are pleased to host the ESRC Digital Security by Design Social Science Hub+ (Discribe) team to introduce their Substantive Projects Funding Call.

We invite you to join our online event on 10 November 2021 (14.30-16.00) to learn about the latest Discribe Hub+ funding call. There is £800,000 to award in this round, and the Discribe Hub+ expect to fund at least 4-5 projects of at least 12 months duration.

Registration now open: SPRITE+ Expert Fellows' Meeting

Registration is now open for the Expert Fellows' meeting at the spectacular Titanic Centre, Belfast on 11/12 April 2022.

We have a great couple of days planned including guest speakers, dinner and drinks, and lots of networking time. During our meeting we'll be working together to scope the future of digital Trust, Identity, Privacy, and Security (TIPS). Stakeholders - including industry reps, government, and UKRI - will be closely involved and our recommendations will inform future funding and policy decisions.

More projects funded via the SPRITE+ Sandpit

In July 2021 we welcomed 35 participants from 25 different organisations to our online sandpit focussed on the theme of 'digital vulnerabilities'. Five teams secured funding for their four month projects which will explore aspects of digital vulnerability from technical, social, and socio-technical perspectives.

Congratulations to the 'FiVu: Using Design Fiction to Identify Future Vulnerabilities in Bio-IOT' project team, which is led by Dr Charles Weir (Lancaster University), Dr José-Rodrigo Córdoba-Pachón (Royal Holloway University of London), Professor Lynne Coventry (Northumbria University) and Dr Soteris Demetriou (Imperial College London).

Congratulations to the 'Buy Now Pay Later in the UK: Current and emergent digital vulnerabilities' project team, which is led by Dr Lindsey Appleyard (Coventry University), Dr Jo Briggs (Northumbria University), Dr Lucia Cervi (Lancaster University), Dr Deepak Padmanabhan (Queen's University Belfast), Dr Gauri Sinha (Royal Holloway University of London) and Dr Tahir Abbas Syed (University of Manchester).

Expert Fellows are invited to give elevator pitches at our in person meeting in London at LORCA on 26 November 2021 (see details above). This is a fantastic opportunity to share your research with academic colleagues, stakeholders and industrial partners.

SPRITE+ funded FiVU team are recruiting a research assistant

The RA will help the team in their 3 month project to identify vulnerabilities, beyond current threats, and with the use of creative fiction. They will work with fiction fans, software designers, psychologists, systems thinkers and specialists in information security.

The RA will prepare, run and validate fiction results from a survey to be used in an online workshop with software designers and other important stakeholders. They will be responsible for the workshop organization, data collection, analysis and dissemination resulting from these activities. M.Sc. or PhD level is required. Interested? Congratulations to Marion Oswald and colleagues at the AHRC-funded Observatory for Monitoring Data-Driven Approaches to Covid-19 who have published their final project report and practitioner guides. The recording of the report launch event can be viewed here.

Marina Meira and Nathan Paschoalini and colleagues have provided a commentary on the current national ID system in Brazil and the changes proposed by the Brazilian federal Government to amend the National Civil Identification Law.
