Connected Everything Early Career Researcher Placement Scheme

The Regulatory Sandbox is a service developed by the ICO, to support organisations who are creating products and services which utilise personal data in innovative and safe ways. Participants will have the opportunity to engage with our Sandbox team, to draw upon our wider ICO expertise and advice on mitigating risks and embedding ‘data protection by design’. The UK Cyber 9/12 Strategy Challenge is designed to identify and foster the next generation of policy and strategy leaders for the cybersecurity challenges of the future. This is a great opportunity for undergraduate and taught postgraduate students interested in technology, political science and social science to develop practical skills in understanding and responding to a complex problem as well as practicing briefing to senior audiences. Digital Technologies, Power and Control Survey

The SPRITE+ funded Digital Technologies, Power and Control Challenge Working Group has developed a survey about the digital divide, the COVID-19 pandemic and issues of power and control in digital technology use. They will use the survey results to create a benchmark of challenges and opportunities in designing digital technologies.

This survey is for all SPRITE+ members and others who work with digital technology development and/or challenges. It will take approximately 10 minutes to complete.

‘Revealing Young Learners’ Mental Models’ project team publish white paper

In this paper, the team report on the literature related to understanding young learners’ mental models related to deceptive “dark patterns” used by malicious agents online: so-called sludge.

The project team secured funding during the most recent SPRITE+ sandpit, which focused on the topic of digital vulnerabilities. The team is led by Dr Karen Renaud (University of Strathclyde), Dr Bryan Clift (University of Bath), Dr Ben Morrison (Northumbria University), Dr Kovila Coopamootoo (Newcastle University), Dr Cigdem Sengul (Brunel University), Dr Mark Springett (Middlesex University), Dr Jacqui Taylor (Bournemouth University) and Brian Higgins (Comparitech.com).

Communicating cybersecurity: building a community of interest

On Thursday 27 January 2022 (2-3.30pm) SPRITE+ will be hosting an online community building event around communicating cybersecurity.

Our aim is to facilitate the building of potential collaborations and to explore opportunities for academics to partner with non-academic organisations to identify and explore the challenges of communicating cybersecurity. This event will feature short provocative talks and breakout discussions to identify key research challenges and future outputs.

This event will be relevant to researchers from STEM, humanities, arts and social science disciplines and non-academic members from regulators, government departments, businesses and third sector organisations.

Confirmed speakers include:

• Dr Emma Moreton (University of Liverpool) - 'Communicating cyber threats: problems, responses, recommendations'

• Professor Genevieve Liveley (University of Bristol) - 'A Morphology of the Cyber Security Tale'

Congratulations to Karen Renaud and Rosalind Searle who recently published 'Shame in Cyber Security: Effective Behavior Modification Tool or Counterproductive Foil?', which was picked up by The Wall Street Journal.

Congratulations to John Blythe whose work with UCL on labelling for smart products was referenced in the latest NIST work to inform US policy.

Congratulations to Neeshé Khan who recently published 'Understanding factors that influence unintentional insider threat: a framework to counteract unintentional risks'.

Congratulations to Xiaochun Cheng who recently published 'Editorial: Security of cloud service for the manufacturing industry'.

Congratulations to Alex Malbon who recently did a podcast episode with a professional e-sports player and captain of the Arsenal Pro Evolution Soccer (a football computer game) team. They delved deep into the e-sports industry to understand how high performance is achieved and the importance of great teamwork, while also tying the discussion to cyber security teams and how there are similarities.

Congratulations to the Secure Cyber Systems Research Group at the University of Warwick who have been shortlisted for the Techworks National Research and Development Excellence Award. The team have also been awarded a grant from DCMS to explore possible Open RAN solutions and encourage 5G vendor diversity. Read more here.

Congratulations to Victoria Wang who recently published '‘I am not a number’: Conceptualising identity in digital surveillance'.

Congratulations to Jason Nurse who has recently published 'Addressing Skills Shortage and Gap Through Higher Education' and 'What’s Next for Cyber Insurance?'. Jason was interviewed as a Cyber Skills expert for Help Net Security, 'Adapting higher education to address the cybersecurity skills shortage' and an invited panellist for the 2021 Workshop on Research for Insider Threats (WRIT) speaking about 'Insider threats and Radicalization in the Workplace'.
